Course outline

The course will be given on the basis of 3 hours a week (Tuesday, 10AM~12PM and Thursday, 11AM~12PM) in 綜合三館 room 203. The materials for teaching will be regularly posted on the course website:

http://www.stat.nthu.edu.tw/~swcheng/Teaching/math2820/

This course is an introduction to the theory and application of statistical methods. We will particularly focus on probability models and modern statistical concepts, and methods developed in a mathematical framework. Topics to be covered include random variables and their various properties, statistical inference (point and interval estimation, hypothesis testing), statistical modeling for experimental and observational data, survey sampling, some aspects of experimental design, Bayesian analysis, decision theory, and a variety of real applications such as two-sample comparison and analysis of variance.

Assignment

There will be weekly or bi-weekly assignments. You are free to discuss the assignment questions with your classmates, but you must write up your answers individually. You CANNOT turn answers in as a group or simply reproduce a classmate's write up. All homework must be handed in before the end of class on the day it is due. The homework assignments will be based on the international student edition of the textbook (note that the international student edition has an arrangement of problems somewhat different from the regular edition). You are responsible to make sure that you are doing the homework exercises that are actually assigned.

Make-up classes

Due to the change of school calendar in this semester for the COVID-19 epidemic, a make-up class will be offered regularly at Thursday, 12-1 PM in 綜合三館 room 203 before the midterm exam. Those students, who cannot attend the make-up classes, can access the lecture content via video and the internet. There will be no classes after the final exam.
